Vegetables

Okra is a fabulous plant. I learned to love it because it is so happy in Texas in the heat and actually really attractive. It's one of the last of the summer veggies left in the garden. A friend readied my vegetable boxes the other day. She pulled out the old tomatoes and cucumbers and added a pile of amendments we found leftover in my shed. Alfalfa, minerals, raised bed mix and compost went in to top off the boxes.
Now I am ready to plant broccoli, lettuce, kale, spinach, mizuna and chard. Fall to winter gardening is so much easier than spring to summer gardening. Less bugs, less heat, more moisture. It's great. I use frost cloth when it is really cold to help protect things and usually have no problem getting the plants through the winter. As much salad as we eat its lovely to have it so fresh.
I'm actually excited to plant new things and have the garden look tidy again. That end of the summer mess is hard to take after awhile.

  2. I've never actually planted a winter garden. You make it sound so manageable! Broccoli and spinach would be first on my list of things to grow. (I have to admit I'll have to look up minuza...never heard of it!) Thanks for the tips and inspiration. xo, janice
